RESUMO
The detection and characterization of the focal liver lesions in a patient with cirrhosis remain challenges. Over the last years, the development of medical imaging has provided many solutions for the examination of the liver. Ultrasound, the ultrasound contrast media, computed tomography and especially multi detector computed tomography (MDCT) and finally MRI have proved very useful for the detection of liver lesions, and especially of HCC.Although many attempts have been made to compare the results of these different medical imaging methods, technical improvement is so fast that what was true yesterday is uncertain today and will probably be wrong tomorrow. In the meantime, there have been some improvement in the pathological classification of liver nodules, leading to a better understanding of the natural history from liver cirrhosis to hepatocellular carcinoma.
