MR Imaging is currently proposed as an alternative imaging technique for small bowel diseases. The main advantages of this method are the excellent soft-tissue contrast and the absence of radiation exposure. Different approaches have been adopted for studying the small bowel with MRI. The most promising - termed as MR Enteroclysis (MRE) - include duodenal intubation and administration of a maximum amount of 2lt of contrast agent with the patient lying on prone position inside the magnet. An iso-osmotic water solution with polyethylene glycol and electrolytes (PEG) may be used as contrast agent.
