MRI OF THE BREAST: PRINCIPLES AND INDICATIONS

Breast MRI becomes a mandatory examination in breast imaging, because of its high sensitivity to detect malignant breast lesions (between 75-98 % according the studies). The major indications are the following: detection of recurrence in a post treated breast, breast cancer staging particularly in dense breast or in case of lobular infiltrative carcinoma, screening of high risk women, characterization of equivocal lesion in case of inconclusive mammogram, monitoring tumour response after neoadjuvant chemotherapy, detection of implants rupture.
