Over 600,000 cases of venous thromboembolism are diagnosed in the United States every year. Pulmonary embolism is the third most common acute cardiovascular disease. CTPA is now the standard of care for the diagnosis of pulmonary embolism in most instances. The recent PIOPED trial showed an overall sensitivity of CTA of 83% with a significantly higher specificity. The commonly accepted technique for CTPA includes the use of multidetector CT.(...)
