MRI OF THE ANKLE: LIGAMENTS
JAVIER BELTRAN

RESUMO

Normal Anatomy
The ligaments of the distal tibiofibular syndesmosis, the
collateral ligaments of the ankle, and the ligaments of
the sinus tarsi will be discussed in detail since they are
frequently injured and eventually may require MRI evaluation. The ligaments of the distal tibiofibular syndesmosis include the anterior and posterior tibiofibular ligaments, and the interosseous membrane. The anterior tibiofibular ligament may have a separate distal fascicle, which has been implicated in talar impingement syndrome. The posterior talofibular ligament contains a deep and more inferior fascicle called the inferior
transverse ligament. It has been postulated that the inferior
transverse ligament provides increased depth to the tibial
plafond posteriorly, in a way similar to the glenoid labrum.
